Chapter 12

A vibrating rattle roused Kasey from her slumber.

The room was pitch black, but for the flashing light lying just out of reach. It took Kasey a few moments to recognize her surroundings. Her hotel suite at the Beaver Building, Kendra’s stronghold. It was the only place she felt safe sleeping these days.

Dragging herself across the bed, she grabbed her phone. Bishop’s name flashed on the screen as it vibrated in her hand.

“Hey Bishop,” Kasey mumbled through a yawn. “What are you doing calling at this hour?”

“This hour?” Bishop laughed. “It’s almost nine am.”

She’d overslept. Not really surprising, given how late she’d been out at the Den, but she was meant to be meeting Bishop and the others for a briefing at ten.

“Crap.” Kasey groaned as she pulled herself upright. “Don’t worry, I’m up. I’ll be there.”

She searched about for the remote. It had to be here somewhere. She found it under her pillow and pressed the button. The blackout curtains started to rise, the light pouring in confirming it was indeed well and truly time to start moving about.

“Kasey.” Bishop’s voice sounded as if she were about to deliver a bad prognosis.

“What is it, Bishop?” Kasey asked. “What’s happened?”

“I’m going to be honest, Kasey,” Bishop said. “You told us to keep an eye open. I wasn’t expecting this.”

“Out with it,” Kasey said as she climbed out of bed and headed for the bathroom. “I’ve never known you to hold back.”

“I think you better see it,” Bishop answered. “Sidhe, a lot of them, and something did a real number on them.”

“Where?” Kasey held the phone to her ear as she grabbed her brush and started wrangling her hair back into something that would pass for human.

“Ozone Park, Queens,” Bishop replied. “Some kids got into the old subway tunnels, called it in. Perhaps a good thing. Otherwise, we might not have found them for weeks.”

“Queens?” Kasey peered at the black bags beneath her eyes. She was going to need some concealer. “There’s no way I’ll be able to get back here by ten. Are you sure they are Sidhe?”

“Definitely,” Bishop said. “I need you to take a look at this before I call in the team to clean it up. We can’t leave it like this. Sooner or later, word will get out.”

Bishop was right. A bundle of butchered Sidhe on the eve of an international Congress for the supernatural community; there would be both panic and outrage. Citizens feared a return to the butchery Akihiro had unleashed on the city.

“Got it. I can be out there in about a half hour. Where am I meeting you?”

“The Pitkin Subway Yard,” Bishop replied. “It’s the quickest way in. I’ll meet you out front.”

“See you soon.” Kasey hung up the phone and hurried through her morning routine. As it was, she would have to skip breakfast if she had any chance of reaching the Pitkin Yards in time. She raced through the shower, used a little makeup to make herself look and feel like she hadn’t been out all night, and slipped out the door.
